A very fine quality frost etched blade

84cm (33”) slightly curved single fullered blade with rounded back and spear point. The blade is single edged except for the last 11”. The frost etched blade is decorated on one side with the crowned royal coat of arms above the royal cypher for Victoria and a cannon with extensive foliate designs. The reverse has a winged thunderbolt and Artillery and extensive foliate designs and a brass proof disc.

Steel three bar hilt, back piece partly cross hatched, stepped [pommel and circular prominent tang button. Fish skin grip with copper/brass wire.

Maker: No maker (A number of Makers and Cutlers used the same proof mark including Hawkes and Firmin as well as some German Makers who exported swords to the USA during the American Civil War – the high quality of the frost etching suggests that the sword came from a good cutler)

Dated: 1860 - 1890 (Artillery swords became progressively lighter and with narrower blades during the Victorian era and later – the weight and width of this sword suggests a date of between 1860 – 1890).

Steel scabbard with two loose rings.

The sword and scabbard are in very good condition for their age. The blade is as new with only some minor stains towards the tip. The frost etching is very clear and of a high quality.

The hilt is in very good condition with some staining, it is firm on the tang. The fish skin grip is as new and the wire bindings complete. The scabbard is in good condition with some surface staining but no rust or dents.
