BRITISH NAPOLEONIC LIGHT INFANTRY OFFICERS SWORD – GEORGE III

A good example of a British Light Infantry or Flank Officers sword from the Napoleonic Wars

76cm (30”) curved flat backed single fullered blade with hatchet point. The blade is single edged except for the last 6”. The blade is engraved on one side with the crowned royal cypher for George III, a stand of arms and various foliate and talismanic symbols. The other side has the crowned royal coat of arms, a stand of arms and various foliate and talismanic symbols. The back of the blade has the makers name. The faces of the blade have a watered steel finish.

Brass stirrup hilt and crosspiece with downward quillon and two pointed langets. Brass back piece and beak nose pommel. Fishskin grip and brass wire bindings.

Maker: J J Runkel Solingen (John Justus Runkel traded from Tookes Court, London from 1795 – 1808)

No scabbard

The sword and scabbard are in good condition for their age. The blade is in good condition with no knicks it has an overall grey patina. The hilt has received some knocks but is firm on the tang. There appears to have been some work done to the upper part of the fishskin grip which has been replaced with leather.
